The State of the Small Plan Market

Mar 26, 2019

Cracking the code on the small plan market has long been a challenge of the retirement industry, but in recent years, the large, persistent coverage gap among small businesses relative to other markets has led to significant attention from the government, plan providers, and key industry groups.

With that in mind, in January 2019, the Retirement Leadership Forum surveyed more than 400 businesses with plans ranging in size from 2 to 500 participants with the goal of understanding more about their attitudes towards their retirement plan and their providers. In the first of a two-part series, we’ll take a deep dive into the retirement plan itself, including:

  • Adoption rates of retirement plans among small business including the key reasons they have a plan (or not)
  • Current plan design features and likelihood to adopt new feature
  • Likelihood to adopt MEPs, state plans, or Robo(k) plans

The goal of this webinar is to provide our members with insight that will help them better understand what the small business owner values from a retirement plan. Part 2, coming in the second quarter of this year, will focus on what they expect from the providers of the plan (i.e., recordkeepers, advisors, investment managers).
