We’re working on new research in the retirement income space for release this Fall, and we wanted to share a few of the early findings. At a high level, adoption of existing solutions by plan is slow so any thought we may have had around measuring asset flows into retirement income products as part of this research is a non-starter.

The RLF is hosting its Q2 2023 Recordkeeper Sales Executive Council virtual meetings on Thursday, June 8. Small market sales executives will meet in the morning and our pre-meeting survey shows that they are facing slower than expected sales in the first half. In interviews, some small market executives commented that plan sponsors’ indecision was hampering the sales environment and others pointed to the stable value market as a hindrance.

Financial Wellness Utilization Is Up, but Impact Unclear

We are wrapping up new research on recordkeepers’ participant education and engagement practices and one of the most interesting findings is that utilization of financial wellness continues to increase.  Eighty percent of recordkeepers indicated that plan sponsor adoption has increased across the last year, while 70% said that participant utilization has increased across the same time.

RLF recently completed a member-requested report on CIT minimums and breakpoints. Based on a survey of 13 DCIO firms, the report revealed that a majority of firms still maintain minimums but are able to waive them for the right opportunity (e.g., the right distribution relationship).

Last week, the RLF hosted its first virtual Recordkeeper Sales Executive Council meeting of 2022. In both sessions, small market (under $50M) and large market (over $50M), executives reported higher than normal sales activity in Q1 and Q2. In the large market, executives reported a record level of activity and commented that plans were actually looking to move, unlike last year where firms struggled to unseat the incumbent.

On April 28th, we hosted our first (virtual) meeting of our Participant Education and Engagement Council, a new networking group that we formed for recordkeepers to share best practices in improving participants outcomes. Twenty-one executives attended the inaugural event, and the discussion focused on how firms are using data and technology to increase the effectiveness of their participant strategies.

Capital Group Enters the Personalized TDF Space

In a press release last week, Capital Group announced the launch of Target Date Plus; a new, personalized target date product that uses an individual participant’s data to create a customized glide path.  In addition to Capital Group’s glidepath expertise, the product leverages data from recordkeepers and Morningstar’s managed account technology to deliver the customized asset allocation.

RLF surveys found that most recordkeepers and DCIOs expected to end the year above 2021 sales goals. Recordkeeping Sales Remains High

Two recent RLF surveys point to the continued acceleration of RFP and sales activity across market segments. In one survey, 57% of large market sales leaders (plans over $50 million in assets) reported that year to date sales activity was higher or much higher than a typical year. In another survey of relationship management leaders, almost 40% reported higher RFP activity than a typical year.

As recently as July, our members were optimistic about returning to more normal operations.  They were planning to attend NAPA as their first big industry event and most had plans to return to the office after Labor Day.  While some are at NAPA this week, the Delta variant has delayed many office openings and travel plans, and we are getting an increasing number of questions about vaccine policies and requirements.
